Mother's Kitchen Guidelines
Volunteering
Each month a group of five or six volunteers provide a healthful vegetarian meal for thirty guests at a small, privately owned, non-profit transitional housing facility in Cambridge, MA. Volunteers are recruited, at least, one week prior to the date, so plenty of time is allowed for possible delivery coordination or any change of plans.
Cooking
Usually, one person makes a soup, one person provides a salad, two people split the entrée, and one makes the dessert. All jobs can be split or combined. All food is delivered prepared by 11:00AM on a Sunday morning, once a month. The meal that we prepare is served for lunch, and must be brought in ready to serve.
Delivering
It is an option for a cook to deliver on Saturday late afternoon or evening, if it is not convenient to drop off on a Sunday. Please keep the coordinator informed of your delivery plans.
All food prepared for the monthly meal must be delivered to the shelter no later than 11:00 AM on the Sunday for which it is intended.
It can be arranged to drop off on Saturday if it is more convenient. Please contact Prema to confirm drop off time. The shelter address is 109 School Street in Central Square Cambridge (directions below). There is one “No Parking Here to Corner” spot just after the turn onto School Street on the right across from the building, that I have found OK to park in, with flashers on, for the few minutes it takes to bring the food inside. The Shelter is a tan triple decker with a front porch. Ring the bell and a courteous person will let you in, just tell them that you are delivering food for the Sunday meal. You may call Prema’s cell 978-996-9109 if there are any problems.
Coordinating
The coordinator will call the shelter on Saturday to let them know that the Sunday lunch will be provided and when the food will be delivered. All meals should be vegetarian and well balanced, as well as attractively arranged. Fresh ingredients should always be used. Remember -- we are serving Our Beloved Mother’s darling children, and these meals should be prepared with much love and care!
Donating
This project will only work if many volunteers participate as cooks, or give cash, or food donations, so that the monthly responsibilities are rotated. Please contact Mother’s Kitchen Coordinator to volunteer or contribute a donation.
